Q&A with Dahlia Nite, Protagonist of Nite Fire: Flash Point
  • You weren’t born on our world. Tell us about Drimera and your life there.
    • Drimera is ruled by the powerful dragon-queen Naalish. Though, she’s more of a tyrant than a queen. Below her are lesser dragon kings, each in charge of their own tribes. Laws are enforced by the Guild, a military style organization that sticks its nose in whatever business Naalish decides is hers. My kind, lyrriken, we do all the heavy lifting and all the dirty work. We’re born from the mating of a male dragon in human form and a human female. We can’t reproduce ourselves. When we try, a mutation occurs. And the creature we give birth to… It isn’t worth the risk. Our existence is entirely dependent on the dragons, and they make sure we know it. Which makes us born beholden and willing to serve. Free will is not a concept on my world.
    • The Guild chose me for their ranks when I was young. They educated and trained me. I worked hard for years to earn my place among them. Eventually, I gained command of my own squad, and the queen’s favor. Back then, it was all I’d ever wanted.
  • What do you miss the most about your home world?
    • The sense of belonging, the camaraderie that existed between lyrriken—especially between those of us with in the Guild. Aside from living, working, and training together, many of us grew up together. Our connections weren’t built on friendship or love. Most lyrriken find such emotions cumbersome and pointless. Our solidarity was based more on mutual respect, commonalities, instinct, and shared experiences. We had the same goals and hopes, the same love for our home, and the same desire to please our queen. Except, none of it was real. My entire upbringing was fabricated and manipulated. We were brainwashed, tortured, abused. And we asked for more because we believed we had the greatest purpose of all: to serve those who gave us life.
    • So, if you take away all that bullshit, what I miss most is the smell of the air. And the twin moons. With all my travels to other worlds, I’ve never seen their like. All I had to do was look up at the sky, and know I was home.
  • A lyrriken is half human and half dragon. Of all three species, which do you feel the closest to?
    • Humans. Though, if you’d told me a hundred years ago that would be my answer, I would have laughed at you. Fifty years ago, even twenty, I’m not sure I could have answered it at all. I was a fugitive when I left Drimera. My early years here consisted of one long blur of running. Then it was decades of investigations, fake IDs, cover-ups, shitty motels, truck stops, and dive bars. I struggled with things like connections and trust. I still do. But it’s different now. I’ve found something here in Sentinel City. For the first time, I’ve let myself form real connections. And they’ve rooted themselves deeper than I could have ever predicted.
    • It scares me, sometimes. That I have something to lose now. I have a life. It’s not one you would consider normal. I’m never going to have that. I’m not a 9-5, white-picket-fence kind of girl. I’m still investigating monster sightings and covering them up, but I work as a consultant for the SCPD now. I have a job, an apartment. I have friends who care about me.
    • It’s my version of a normal life. And I’ll do anything to protect it.
  • Lyrriken have special abilities, powers one might would consider “superhuman”. What gifts did you inherit from your dragon father? Which is most important to your survival?
    • All lyrriken are born with rapid healing, longevity, strength, heightened senses, and the ability to shift between our scaled lyrriken forms and human. We also have offensive powers such as: the generation and manipulation of fire, water, air, land, and a talent for crafting illusions. In rare cases, other psychic abilities can manifest.
    • I’m one of those rare cases. Aside from being able to produce and wield fire, I’m also empathic. Though fire is my go-to weapon in a fight, my empathic ability is directly related to my survival on this world. It’s allowed me to understand and experience the emotions of others on a level that’s foreign to other lyrriken. I can read, see, and experience only the negative (things like grief, regret, loneliness, fear, anger).
    • Humans are inherently emotional creatures. While I’ve come to know them well, they still manage to surprise me. And if a species can thrive this much, carrying around the weight of so much trauma, they’re worth my protection and respect. Neither of which I would feel so deeply if not for my empathic ability.
  • If you had to choose one of your forms for all eternity, which would you pick?
    • Damn. You don’t pull any punches, do you? The closest I’ve come to happiness is here in this place, in my human form, with these people. But if I had to pick one, it would have to be lyrriken. No matter how comfortable I’ve grown with my human half, no matter how much they’ve come to feel like home, I will never be one of them. I was born scaled. I don’t think I could live without that part of me.
  • Do you have any hobbies? What do you do for fun?
    • I’ve never had time for hobbies. Though my self-appointed sidekick, Casey Evans, has recently turned me onto the art of binge-watching. Does that count?
    • Fun is tracking down a mystery. Solving a case. Knowing you’ve saved lives. Maybe you see that as more rewarding than fun, but every mystery is its own roller coaster. And solving it comes with an adrenaline rush bigger than any ride in the amusement park.
  • Do you have a role model?
    • Not anymore. There was a time when I worshipped Queen Naalish. She was everything to me. She was everything I wanted to be. Until I realized she was a calculating, cold-hearted, manipulative bitch. That about did it for me and hero worship. But there are human traits I’ve come to admire and aspire to. My partner, Detective Alex Creed has a sense of morality and justice that just won’t quit. The energy and eagerness that Casey Evans brings to every situation, no matter how dark and dangerous it is; I wish I could see the world the way he does. I wish I could see myself the way he does.
  • What do you consider your greatest strength? What’s your greatest weakness?
    • I have the same answer for both those questions: I don’t give up. Depending on the circumstances, that’s a strength. Other times, not so much.
  • Do you have any quirks or bad habits?
    • Hmmm…maybe a few. Tequila, whiskey, beer, coffee, junk food, energy drinks—those things will kill you. I’m hard as hell on clothes and quick with a punch. I drive too fast. I curse like a ship-full of drunken sailors. Creed will tell you I crack bad jokes at highly inappropriate times. But I mostly do it to piss him off.
  • If you knew you were going to die in 24 hours, what would you do in the time you had left?
    • Well, I wouldn’t tell anyone my time was up. Being empathic, I deal with enough negative emotions on a daily basis. Processing someone else’s grief over my impending death—no thanks. I’ll pass.
    • As far as what I’d do with the time… I’d grab an extra-large coffee and walk the streets of Sentinel City a while. Alone. At night. Just soaking it all up one last time. Then I’d grab the few friends I’ve made here and bring them to my favorite bar: Nadine’s. The place itself is nothing special. Just a dark, dingy, little jazz club. But the tequila is top shelf. And the ice cream is to die for. Okay, maybe the bad jokes aren’t just for Creed.

Genre: Science Fiction

From multimillion dollar, best-selling author Craig Alanson (and narrated by fan-favorite R.C. Bray) Expeditionary Force is a New York Times best-selling military science-fiction series that will be composed of 14 novels. The first audiobook in the series, Columbus Day, was one of five finalists for the prestigious Audie Award in 2018 and has been optioned for film and television by Milmar Pictures (AIR FORCE ONE, CASTLE, HOLLOW MAN). Zachary Quinto (STAR TREK, NOS482, HEROES) and Kate Mulgrew (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, STAR TREK: VOYAGER) starred in the epic Expeditionary Force audio drama HOMEFRONT; Armageddon, Book 8, debuted at #1 on all of Audible. Books 1-9 are available now on Audible.

Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise, and he’s going to keep it: taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn’t agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool’s errand he doesn’t expect to ever return from. At least this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

Podium Audio is thrilled to announce the debut of the studio’s first audiobook trailer to mark the release of Valkyrie, the highly-anticipated ninth installment of New York Times best-selling author Craig Alanson’s Expeditionary Force sci-fi audiobook series. Voiced by R.C. Bray and edited by leading advertising agency Jump/Cut (trailers for PARASITE, FIRST REFORMED, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC), the audiobook trailer is Podium’s first foray into the audiovisual realm.

From an early age Audie, Earphones, and SOVAS Voice Arts Award-winning audiobook narrator R.C. Bray despised reading. Truly hated it with a passion. And audiobooks? Even worse. Those were for people too lazy to read (not to be confused with those like himself who didn’t want to read to begin with). R.C. eventually got older and wiser (he was always good-looking) and eschewing his capricious convictions fell head-over-heels with reading. Not just to learn words like “eschew” and “capricious” so he could use them in a bio line, but because someone was actually going to give him money to do it. Note: R.C.’s gorgeous wife and three beautiful children begged him not to make this his official bio. Clearly he misunderstood.

Q&A with Author Craig Alanson: Part II
  • If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles?
    • Fans have asked what aliens in the books look like, and my answer is they look like whatever the art director if the TV series thinks they look like. Same with casting actors. Whatever I say will get someone upset. The ‘Expeditionary Force’ Facebook page has many fans who argue about that subject.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • I would say nothing. Actually, I would say ‘Umm’ and smile and nod politely, and then never speak to them again during their sad, lonely little lives. The world is full of idiots, never waste your time arguing with them.
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    • By hitting the ‘Send’ button to email the manuscript to Podium. Then I clean my laptop, open a new Word document and start the next book. Usually my wife and I also go out for a nice dinner.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • My wife shows me that we have to make a mortgage payment at the end of the month. I find that very inspiring.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • Writing a series can be easier because you already know the world and the characters. It can be more difficult because with each book, you have to keep that world and those characters fresh and interesting. With Expeditionary Force, I am writing to a series outline, so it is really like writing a really long book. Really long, like the books you were forced to read over the summer in high school.
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • Not yet. I think about them constantly while I’m awake.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
    • There is writing advice in one of my blogs on craigalanson.com but basically my advice is write a book you would want to read, and write. Write a lot, that is how you develop your style and discover what works for you.
  • Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
    • Find a good partner. Working with Podium has been very good for me. Also, do not try to narrate the book yourself unless you have already been doing voice work and are good at it. Also, a good narrator is worth every penny (and more!).
  • What’s next for you?
    • The next book

Louisiana cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse is stuck in the middle of a vampire gathering on the verge of disaster in the seventh novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Sookie Stackhouse has her hands full with shapeshifter Quinn—a possible new man in her life—and the upcoming central U.S. Vampire Summit on the shores of Lake Michigan. Sookie’s job at the summit is to support Vampire Queen Sophie-Anne, whose power base was weakened by hurricane damage to New Orleans. But Sookie is about to discover just how dangerous that job can be, as she is drawn further and further into the vampire world…

Ruby can’t look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government’s attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. Only Ruby can keep their highly dangerous prisoner in check. But with Clancy Gray, there’s no guarantee you’re fully in control, and everything comes with a price.

When the Children’s League disbands, Ruby rises up as a leader and forms an unlikely allegiance with Liam’s brother, Cole, who has a volatile secret of his own. There are still thousands of other Psi kids suffering in government “rehabilitation camps” all over the country. Freeing them – revealing the governments unspeakable abuses in the process – is the mission Ruby has claimed since her own escape from Thurmond, the worst camp in the country.

But not everyone is supportive of the plan Ruby and Cole craft to free the camps. As tensions rise, competing ideals threaten the mission to uncover the cause of IANN, the disease that killed most of America’s children and left Ruby and others with powers the government will kill to keep contained. With the fate of a generation in their hands, there is no room for error. One wrong move could be the spark that sets the world on fire.

“All things are composed of patterns…” And within the pattern of the realm of Alorin, three strands must cross:

In Alorin…three hundred years after the genocidal Adept Wars, the realm is dying, and the blessed Adept race dies with it. One man holds the secret to reverting this decline: Bjorn van Gelderan, a dangerous and enigmatic man whose shocking betrayal three centuries past earned him a traitor’s brand. It is the Adept Vestal Raine D’Lacourte’s mission to learn what Bjorn knows in the hope of salvaging his race. But first he’ll have to find him…

In the kingdom of Dannym…the young Prince Ean val Lorian faces a tenuous future as the last living heir to the coveted Eagle Throne. When his blood-brother is slain during a failed assassination, Ean embarks on a desperate hunt for the man responsible. Yet his advisors have their own agendas, and his quest for vengeance leads him ever deeper into a sinuous plot masterminded by a mysterious and powerful man, the one they call First Lord…

In the Nadori desert…tormented by the missing pieces of his life, a soldier named Trell heads off to uncover the truth of his shadowed past. But when disaster places him in the debt of Wildlings sworn to the First Lord, Trell begins to suspect a deadlier, darker secret motivating them.

Georgia Rose is a product of rural England and the countryside setting is the theme running through her books. She loves strong characters and finds developing them incredibly satisfying. Instructing and working with horses has provided the knowledge needed for some of her storylines and these can come from a fragment of conversation, via Georgia’s not so surreptitious people watching or most often from her overactive imagination. Georgia’s busy life is set in a tranquil part of rural Cambridgeshire in the UK where she lives with her much neglected husband and dog. She loves afternoon tea, the way the word loquacious rolls off the tongue and she sincerely believes inanimate objects have feelings. She does not care for clowns or kites and can’t understand why adding salt to caramel is seen as a good thing. She also hates every photo ever taken of her…

Protagonist Madeleine Ross
Name: Now, Madeleine Ross, known as Maddy. Then, Scarlet Butler. Age: 24 Description: 5’ 9” gym fit body. Green eyes, long, dark brown hair, worn up or down. Some might call her promiscuous. She doesn’t, or at least didn’t. Independent, she’s capable of looking after herself, and although she has a mysterious background she’s successfully reinvented herself as a good friend but something of a loner, even now living a double life, in more ways than one. Loyal to her few friends, she’ll do whatever it takes to protect them. She loves reading, eating and sex, although not necessarily in that order. She abhors small talk, likes steak with a friend, drinks red wine in public but bourbon in private. She has no pets, no plants, nothing that has to rely on her in order to stay alive but she has discovered a love of horses so who knows if that will change in the future?
Q&A with Protagonist Madeleine Ross
  • Did you grow up rich or poor?
    • Poor.
  • What smell reminds you of your childhood?
    • Cigarette smoke, I hate it, yet keep going back for more.
  • What is your worst childhood memory?
    • You’d have to read the book for that, this interview is not the place for such revelations.
  • What was your first kiss like?
    • I can’t remember but I imagine it was unrequited.
  • What is the worst thing you did to someone you loved?
    • I left them, to save myself.
  • What haunts you?
    • Those from my past.
  • Are you a minimalist or a hoarder?
    • In my cottage I’m mostly a minimalist but you could feed the whole village with the contents of my kitchen.
  • How do you respond to a threat?
    • With direct action.
  • If you could only save one thing from your burning house what would it be?
    • Nothing, I need no material possessions.
  • Do you believe in happy endings?
    • Hmmm, I believe in happily enough for now… will that do?

Book 5 is now available!
The First Lord’s game has reached a critical apex. For the first time in millennia, the teams are equally matched. From the dimension of Shadow to the realm of T’khendar, from the Empire of Agasan to the fire deserts of Avatar, Ean, Tanis, Trell, Sebastian and the rest of Bjorn’s Players will be holding their positions against immortal enemies in a game where mortal consequences hang in the balance of every choice.
Melissa McPhail is the author of the best-selling epic fantasy series A Pattern of Shadow & Light. She’s the mother of twin girls who think boys in books are just better, and the adoptive mother to four very large cats who basically rule the roost; and while she can never leave the house in one attempt, she’s pretty darn good at spinning a tale. She’s also a classically trained pianist, violinist and composer, a Vinyasa yoga instructor, and an avid tea drinker. Melissa’s fantasy series has won eight best fantasy awards and (even more importantly to her) a fiercely devoted following. She is known for being an engaged author on social media and welcomes your thoughts on her work, the speculative fiction genre or writing in general.

Q&A with Author Melissa McPhail: Part I
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • I was thrilled when Podium contacted me with an offer to publish my series in audio format. One of the most interesting parts of the process has been going through each book and pulling out words and nomenclature that are unique to my world and its magic system in order to catalog their pronunciations.
    • Sometimes I had only heard those words in my head up to that point. Trying to pronounce them for Nick Podehl, my incredibly talented narrator, sometimes proved challenging. I had to practice saying the names aloud so I could correctly show Nick how to say them.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • In my (admittedly limited) experience, a simple story can be made interesting if the narrator really knows his business, while even the most lyrical writing can be ruined by a narrator who doesn’t sound interested in the material.
    • As with any art form, when you translate it from its original medium into another one, the translator really needs to be an artist himself. Nick Podehl has an amazing talent with voices, as well as an ability to interpret and present the correct emotion for each character. My series would not have done nearly as well read by a less talented (or less passionate) narrator.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • Sadly not! I might’ve come up with much less complicated names if I had been thinking about someone having to speak them aloud—LOL.
    • A major factor in my name choices is how the word looks on the page. The spelling as much as the sound of the name imparts a certain feeling to the character. The spelling is critical, in fact, to my concept of the character.
    • The reader both sees and hears the word in their minds. If I had been writing specifically with audio in mind, I might have named some characters differently.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • I trusted Podium to find the best narrator to bring my story to life, and I cannot now imagine anyone else but Nick Podehl as the voice of my series.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • As I mentioned above, I sat down with a Podium producer and walked through all the names, titles, cities and magical nomenclature specific to my world. This enabled Nick to know how to say the names properly.
    • Because I have so many diverse peoples and cultures in my world, we also discussed types of accents and inflections that might influence the way Nick could portray the character. With that said, all I really did was give him some guidelines. Nick did the heavy lifting in bringing my words and characters to life.
  • Were there any real-life inspirations behind your writing?
    • A number of books significantly impacted me as a teenager, in part because of my age upon first reading them, and in part because of the things that were happening in my life at the time. These experiences showed me how profoundly stories can influence our lives for the better.
    • I write allegorical fantasy because I want to share the philosophical truths I’ve found through my own studies of philosophy and comparative religion, but I want to present these ideas in a way that doesn’t preach, isn’t political and has no personal agenda.
    • Sometimes we read stories that hit too close to the mark in our own lives. We don’t want to think about those problems, and we reject any inherent truth the story has to offer.
    • The value of allegorical fantasy is that it’s generally just far enough removed from our own lives to be able to look at a character’s struggles, see that their path is similar to our own, but still find hope or encouragement in the way the character is handling those trials.
    • It’s important to me with my writing to present philosophical ideas in a way that others can compare them to their own lives without feeling endangered by the ideas. They can see events from a different perspective and determine if the characters’ ideas and ways of handling things could also be true for them.
    • It’s hugely rewarding to me when readers write to tell me that they’re using some piece of philosophy from my books in their daily lives, or that a particular character’s struggle has helped them overcome or in some way feel more capable of dealing with their own life challenges.
    • Ultimately, it’s important to me to present ideas of hope, courage, honor, and most of all, causative action, through the experiences of my characters.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • For me, writing is a calling. It’s my passion and my first love. I wouldn’t want to envision life without this means of communicating my ideas and thoughts to others.
    • I think because of this, I’ve never experienced burnout, but my yoga background has also helped me to know the importance of finding balance in our lives. Finding balance is a key theme in my life and in my series.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I absolutely adore listening to non-fiction in audio format. My writing is heavily informed by world history, and I continue to be an avid student of it.
    • I’ve been making my way through the Great Lectures series, learning about everything from the impact of the Black Death on the Renaissance to the true history of secret societies. Being able to learn about important events in world history while doing my housework or taking a walk is one of the greatest inventions since sliced bread, as far as I’m concerned.

Reasons I Love Audiobooks

I really enjoy reading. It’s one of my favorite pastimes. However, I also love doing other things. I love playing games and browsing the web. I used to get weird about “wasting so much time doing those things when I could be reading”. I’m a weird person. I can’t help it.

In 2014, I decided to start listening to audiobooks while I did activities where I could “read” but not actively. I listened while working out, cleaning, gaming, and browsing. It has significantly improved my reading life.

I know a lot of people will say that you aren’t really reading when you listen to an audiobook. I disagree. I mean sometimes I have to rewind because I drifted off, but quite frankly I have that problem with books as well. I have ADHD. My mind wanders at random. I can’t help it.

Actually, I feel like listening to audiobooks, I’m more willing to do things I normally dread. I find cleaning and exercising much more enjoyable. I like music, but I have to be in a mood to listen to music. Otherwise, I’ll just flip through songs and never really listen to a full one. I’m weird. I know.

Also, I’ve become aware of groups and communities all about audiobooks. It’s very incredible. I can’t tell you how I stumbled upon them, though. It’s so much a part of my activity now that I can’t recall a time I wasn’t in the groups. Is that cheesy?

I’ve met so many great authors, narrators, and other beautiful people in the book community. And since I started this blog last summer, I’ve met a bunch of beautiful book bloggers, but I digress. There are a few narrators who I will buy their audiobooks from without a second thought.

The final reason I can think of is the fact that my taste in genre has expanded. I’m listening to genres I would have never listened to before. It’s caused my reading to double and almost triple. All in all, I’m happy to be a part of this wonderful community. I’m hoping one day to become a narrator myself.

All About Audiobook: Sarah Puckett

The best way to bring up an audiobook series is to talk about one of my favorite narrators of all time. Her name is Sarah Puckett. She’s so talented. I discovered her through a group called Audiobook Obsession. I’m so glad I did.

Until I listened to books narrated by her, I’ve never really been a emotional reader. I mean I FEEL the emotions. But I don’t bawl like a baby over books. She’s changed that. She really knows how to get into the story and bring out all the feels to the absolute maximum.

I have had the pleasure of actually getting to meet her. I’ve even gotten to sneak in and watch a few of her live shows. She has as great of a personality as she does talent. She’s beautiful inside and out. It’s beautiful to know her. She’s a true inspiration. I hope one day I will be half as good of a narrator as she is.

If anybody is looking for a new narrator to check out, I fully recommend her. I’ve actually discovered great authors thanks to listening to her! I’ll share all the links I found of her. I fully encourage you all check her out!
