Columbus Day by Craig Alanson Book Review

The Earth has been at war with multiple alien planets for over a thousand years. Believing that one set of aliens is the enemy, Earth proceeds to send forces to take them down. It’s on this mission that they discover the aliens they believe are their allies are the real enemies. They want to make all humans their slaves.

My fiancé and I have been listening to this book. We have both enjoyed it very much. It was originally just me listening, but he asked me to start it over so that he could hear it from the beginning. There are so many parts of it that were absolutely hilarious! We had to pause it so we could get the laugh out of our system. We both feel like this was like Independence day. It was very clever. We are looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Joe is the main character. Most other people in the book really take more of a background role than anything, so we don’t really get enough information on them to form a full opinion. I liked Joe though. I’m not sure how old he was, but considering he joined the Army to get free schooling, I’d have to say he’s pretty young. Our favorite character in the book was Skippy. He was an AI that appeared later in the story. He definitely added so much to the story!

This book was narrated by R.C. Bray. He did a fantastic narration of the story. We were both very impressed. I also loved that he completely threw the main accent into the story through the whole thing. I believe Joe is from Maine. It made the whole thing very authentic! It was amazing! His tone reminded me of the narration in Storm of The Century. It was great!

My fiancé really enjoyed this story. I’m amazed he’s giving me the time to get the review in before we start the second book! We are really anxious to get to the rest of the series! I’d fully recommend this book to anybody who likes apocalyptic type books. Especially if they enjoyed the movie Independence Day. It’s well worth the read.
